Propane: The Smarter Choice

2010

Propane is amongst the many naturally occurring products that are formed during petroleum processing. It has been described as a gas, but it is usually transported in the form of a liquid under standard conditions. One of the major reasons why propane is being popularised as an alternative to traditional fuels is because of the assured safety in handling it, and the extremely low level of greenhouse gases it emits when subjected to combustion. There as many uses for propane, such as:

Domestic Heating
Another emerging trend in the growing use of propane as a tool to save upon household power bills is its use in heating appliances. Most of these appliances use propane as the primary source of energy when it is mixed up with other combustible gases. Such heating options are becoming the norm in Europe and the colder parts of North America, where they are being increasingly used for keeping interiors warm. Propane is being used in heating appliances like:

Water heaters — they do not need to have a fixed source of fuel like a gas line, and can be installed in any part of the house. It has been established that when using propane-heated water heaters, household electric bills can be reduced by nearly 22%. In addition, without feeling frustrated due to power cuts or facing electrical hazards, such water heaters are more practical.

Patio heaters — they are much cheaper than their electric counterparts are, provide a larger range of size-based options and require minimal maintenance.

Fireplaces — are much easier to install when compared to conventional fireplaces, provide easy use via a thermostat-controlled room temperature system, and do not emit any unwanted fumes or gases.

LPG: Domestic Fuel Par Excellence
LPG is amongst one of the cleanest fuels when ignited, as it leaves absolutely no residue. It has become the domestic fuel of preference the world over, with the amazing convenience of storing and supplying it via cylinders and tanks to domestic users. It is much less expensive than traditional fuels such as gasoline; it emits fewer toxic compounds, and has relatively negligible air pollutants that create smog. Propane grills, stoves and barbecues are much cheaper to operate, run and repair when compared to charcoal or electric grills of furnaces.

Powering Your Car — another growing use of propane is in the form of an alternative vehicle fuel. The commercial use of LPG is not very popular since it does not have the ability to power heavier engines, but smaller household vehicles are being powered by it. It is looked upon as a decent substitute for petrol in car engines, since it has limited exhaust emissions and does not leave the engine dry like CNG (compressed natural gas), which raises maintenance costs in the form of increased use of lubricants and reduced life of the sparkplug.
